Bodies: Ready for Redemption (4)

Listen online or download Sunday messages, and here!
Christus Victor, the ancient blessing and sign
the entwined fingers, for the two natures
Two made one, perfectly
the miracle of conception, pregnancy, birth
a body that (ideally) manifests the love of mom and dad

What does the body of Jesus manifest?
Mystery: He became fully human, without ceasing to be fully God

Our bodies:
toilet paper, pepto bismol
tissues, allergy meds
Stephen Baxter, Ring, re human evolution, "will always have our plumbing"

Yet Mary hosted GOD in CHRIST
What does the body of Jesus manifest?
He loves human beings, and both brings glory to human bodies and finds glory in human bodies
practiced obedience to God, offered his body to God ... our potential!

The contrary story: Alien and Prometheus and pregnancies
DNA cannibalizes, parasite destroys the host

Then, when desire has conceived it gives birth to sin,
and sin, when it is full grown, gives birth to death.
James 1.15

Those internal processes, like desire and belief, have real-world consequence. Bodies and souls are not entirely separate. Human beings are both, together. And, unfortunately, we have all conceived sin, the seed of our own self-destruction. We need Christus Victor to triumph, we need a new narrative, a new birth, a new life, to vanquish the trajectory we created for ourselves.

What does the body of Jesus manifest?

Like Mary, we can bear God, in our lives, into our world

Mary: "Blessed is she who believed" (Luke 1.45)
Mary: love - love for God

This is the irrational season,
when love blooms bright and wild;
if Mary had been filled with reason
there’d have been no room for the child.

Madeline L’Engle

O holy Child of Bethlehem,
descend to us, we pray!
Cast out our sin and enter in,
be born in us today.

We hear the Christmas angels
the great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us,
our Lord, Emmanuel!

Philip Brooks

Blessing, Hebrews 10:5, 10, excerptsWhen Christ came into the world, he said, "Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me. 10 And it is by God's will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
