Unity, Diversity, and Purpose

A great morning at Bethany.  A wonderful breakfast was prepared and a great worship with Rev. Dr. Ed Zeiders.  We were fed physically and spiritually.  Pastor Dennis wore a kilt to celebrate the 737 pounds of food collected by the church family for The Well.

Friday, April 24, 2015

"Pound the Pastor" is in full swing at Bethany.  The challenge for the church family is to collect 500 pounds of canned food for The Well.  The challenge began April 6 and ends Sunday, May 3.  Pastor Dennis says he will wear a kilt for worship one Sunday in May providing the church family reaches the goal of 500 pounds. Together we can help feed those who are hungry in our community. The question remains, WILL HE WEAR A KILT?

TAIM (Think About It Moment)

Recently I was reminiscing about my first day of school. It was a long time ago, but I remember the excitement building as the school bus came up the long hill.  I was filled with questions and anxiety as I climbed the steps of that big yellow bus.  Wow, those steps were huge!  The bus driver was Mr. Dietz, who was a member of our church and he owned the grocery store where we purchased groceries every Friday evening.  He always dipped my cone of chocolate marshmallow ice cream – which was my treat on Friday evenings.  Although it was costly, since I got to lick all the King Korn Stamps for the booklets after getting home . . . yuck!

I liked Mr. Dietz, but there were a lot of uncertainties about this new adventure he was driving me to on this big yellow bus!  A bus filled with a lot of kids.  Kids I didn’t know.  Many were older and bigger.  What would it be like?  What would be expected of me?  What challenges would I face?  Who would be my teacher?  What’s this thing called homework?  School lunches?  What pocket is that money for lunch in?  Can I make the grade?  There were a lot of uncertainties as I sat quietly. A journey that began as I climbed the steps of that big yellow bus.

There are a lot of uncertainties as we prepare for 2015.  None of us know what to expect.  You might say 2015 is filled with mysteries that will only be revealed as we say good bye to 2014.  It will be a new year filled with uncertainties of what will come our way.

Some of those questions are:  Will I be healthy?  Will it be a cold and snowy winter?  Will I be able to replace my car?  Will the house be sold?  Will I still have my job?  Who will win the Super Bowl?  Will the gas prices continue to go down?  Will our nation find healing?  Will my children/grandchildren be okay?  Will Bethany find financial stability?  Will our children/youth ministries continue grow?  What lies before us as we step into 2015?  Honestly, I don’t know!

What can we be confident of as we enter 2015 with all its uncertainties?   Give me something I can embrace and hold on too.  Is there anything?

“God is our refuge and strength, and ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, through its waters roar and foam and mountains quake with their surging.  Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”
Psalm 46: 1,2,10,11

My prayer for all of you:  “May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.  I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.  Amen.”   (Prayer is found in Ephesians the first chapter)

Happy New Year!
